Strawberry season is one of my favorite times of year. One of my best memories from childhood is doing pick your own strawberries at Duffield’s Farm. After eating them locally in season, they are kind of ruined for the rest of the year, when you have to get those giant, flavorless berries from the grocery store. They are just so perfect in the short time that you have them, though.
Sadly, this year the season was cut short by some absurd heat waves here in South Jersey during late May and early June. 2011 strawberry crop, we hardly knew ye.

With balsamic vinegar and vanilla ice cream, they make a great dessert or brunch, without having to cook the freshness out of them.
Of course, they’re amazing just plain too. Now it is another whole year till they come back in season! Anticipation, why do you torture me?
